A disk image is an exact software copy of information on a physical storage device such as the hard drive or optical disk inside a computer. The copy saves all information, file structures and folders, including free space and slack space, in a single file that may be copied and stored separately. A disk image completely copies the disk and so differs from a conventional backup that may skip software, files in use, or files that have not changed since the previous backup.
